Nigeria has been highly commended on the global stage for its progressive efforts in refugee protection and humanitarian response. At the 76th Session of the Executive Committee (EXCOM) Meeting of the High Commissioner’s Programme, the country received notable praise from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Filippo Grandi.
The Nigerian delegation was led by the Honourable Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, supported by the Honourable Federal Commissioner, Alhaji Aliyu Tijani Ahmed of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), the government agency mandated to ensure the protection, welfare, and documentation of refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons in Nigeria.
The event took place at Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the EXCOM meeting hosts over 150 member states presenting updates and strategies on global refugee affairs, protection frameworks, and humanitarian priorities.
During the session, Nigeria received commendation for its significant strides in rehabilitation, reintegration, and resettlement of displaced populations. The UNHCR High Commissioner also highlighted Nigeria’s swift and effective issuance of legal documentation to refugees and asylum seekers, a crucial step that enables access to services, protection, and socio-economic inclusion.
This recognition underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening humanitarian systems, advancing durable solutions for forced displacement, and upholding international protection standards.
